Pix Automático gains ground as a tool to reduce payment defaults and make company finances more predictable

The Central Bank's new feature promises to simplify recurring billing and bring more efficiency to cash management for companies of all sizes

Brazil, July 21, 2026 – The arrival of Pix Automático (automatic recurring payments over Pix, Brazil’s instant payment system) marks a new stage in the evolution of digital payments in Brazil. Designed to simplify recurring billing, the tool is being singled out by experts as a solution capable of reducing payment defaults, increasing revenue predictability and simplifying financial management for companies that rely on monthly or periodic payments. The feature lets consumers authorize a charge just once, so payments can be made automatically on the scheduled dates. The model has the potential to replace processes traditionally associated with boletos (bank payment slips) and, in some cases, even direct debit.

According to Guilherme Fernandes, Head of Operations at Trio, a company specializing in payments technology, Pix Automático solves a long-standing problem for businesses: depending on manual processes to make sure payments come in. “The main difference lies in operational friction and technology infrastructure. A boleto requires the person to remember to pay and do it manually every month, which increases the risk of forgetting, and it also takes longer for the money to reach the company’s account. Direct debit solves the forgetting problem, but it’s extremely complex and expensive for companies, because it requires closing agreements and integrating systems with each bank separately. Pix Automático changes that because it runs on the Central Bank of Brazil’s infrastructure. With a single integration, a company can bill customers at any bank in a standardized way, without friction and with the money arriving instantly,” he explains.

Although payment defaults are often associated with a lack of funds, experts point out that a significant share of late payments happens simply because people forget or put off paying. In this context, Pix Automático emerges as an alternative to reduce what the market calls involuntary default. “It solves that ‘accidental’ default. The kind that happens just because the customer forgot the date or kept putting off opening the bank app, copying the code and paying. With Pix Automático, the person authorizes the charge once and that’s it. By removing this manual barrier, the company ensures the payment will happen on the right date, as long as the customer has funds in the account. That alone brings delinquency rates way down,” explains Fernandes.

The mechanism also helps combat a phenomenon known as involuntary churn, when customers stop using a service because the payment didn’t go through properly. “Once the customer authorizes Pix Automático, the system takes care of the rest. It’s perfect because the company secures its revenue and the customer no longer has to worry about remembering the due date every month to keep using the service,” says Fernandes.

More predictable revenue

Besides reducing late payments, the new option also tends to make companies’ cash flow more predictable. Unlike other payment methods that depend on later clearing or may fail on billing attempts, Pix Automático uses the instant infrastructure of the Central Bank’s payment system.

“It combines two very powerful things: the guarantee that the charge will happen and instant receipt. With other methods, the company has to wait days for the money to arrive or depends on credit card retries that can fail. Pix Automático credits the amount immediately. That gives companies a real view of how much cash they have at that exact moment, without relying on estimates,” says the Trio executive.

Revenue predictability is considered a strategic factor, especially for companies that work with subscriptions, monthly fees or recurring contracts.

For financial management experts, cash predictability directly affects companies’ ability to plan investments, control expenses and manage working capital. “The direct impact is lower operating costs and more efficiency for the finance department. When you know exactly when the money will come in and it’s available right away, decisions start to be based on real data. That greatly improves planning and working capital management, because the company stops operating in the dark, reduces the need to advance receivables and pay interest, and can organize itself in a much healthier way,” explains Fernandes.

Benefits for small and midsize businesses

Pix Automático is expected to have a particularly significant impact on small and midsize businesses, which have historically faced barriers to accessing automated billing tools. Previously, setting up direct debit required individual negotiations with financial institutions and specific integrations for each bank.

“Pix Automático gives small and midsize businesses the same efficiency that only large companies used to have. Billing via direct debit required negotiations with banks that weren’t feasible for SMBs. Now, with Pix Automático and a simpler integration, small and midsize businesses have access to that same state-of-the-art infrastructure. It’s the chance to automate billing and grow without having to bloat the finance team,” says Fernandes.

The feature should especially benefit businesses that work with recurring payments. Sectors with the greatest adoption potential include gyms, schools, condominium associations, subscription clubs, health plans, streaming services and public utilities. “Basically, any business that runs on recurring payments. That applies both to the B2B market, such as companies selling subscription services, and to consumer-focused businesses with a large customer base,” Fernandes adds.
